Meet Stella

Meet Stella, Soon to be Retired

Stella attends the General Yoga class on Wednesday evenings

What brought you to yoga? As I get older I feel the need to keep moving and stretching more and more. Yoga also helps you step out of your day for a while and relax.

Were there any obstacles to starting a practice? I had a problem with a shoulder injury which made it quite immobile and I couldn’t put a lot of weight on my arms.

How long have you been practising, in general and with Rosanna? On and off for about 4-5 years. I joined Rosanna’s class just over a year ago.

How do you feel from coming to the classes? I feel much better both mentally and physically. My shoulder causes fewer and fewer problems and I feel much calmer, and cheerful.

Do you have a favourite yoga posture/practice – and why? Warrior and triangle poses make me feel very grounded and strong. You can really feel your connection to the floor through your feet. Downward dog and plank poses turn you upside down and give you a new perspective on the world. It can be hard to get it right but when you are all in line and stretching from the top of your head to the tips of your toes it feels great.

What impact does yoga have on your life, in general and day-to-day? I feel much more grounded and physically stronger. The little reminders in class about engaging core strength for a particular pose always come to mind if I’m doing something at home like bending down or picking up something heavy. I can bend and stretch now without making too many of those embarrassing groaning noises. Doing more yoga is definitely on my must do list for my retirement – which won’t be long now

Any words of advice/tips for people thinking about starting yoga? Have a go! There is NO reason not to try it out. It may take 2-3 classes before you notice any changes but it isn’t a competition. It is about starting to take care of your self and building up your strength at your own pace. We all find we feel different on different days and sometimes it is just not a good day for standing on one leg. It doesn’t matter, there is no pressure in our class and Rosanna is such a positive, encouraging teacher.
